At 08:00hrs on 10 June 2014 Nominet, the UK registry, launched the new, shorter, sharper domain (website) name .UK into the UK domain family. If you are an existing domain holder and own a unique .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .plc.uk or .ltd.uk, a .UK domain name may already have been reserved especially for you until 10 June 2019. There are strict rules about who has the right of registration based on the current domains registered.

DS4A - Nominet Domain Family

If you have held a qualifying domain since before 08:00 on the 10th June 2014*, you will be the only registrant with a right to have the .UK equivalent registered in your name. The registration is done in the same way as for any other domain name.

You have until 10th June 2019 to exercise this right. The normal domain name registration process and registrar fees will apply. After this date, if you have not exercised your right, ANYONE wishing to register the .UK name will be able to do so, in the usual way.

Registrants will have had 5 years to exercise their right of registration, so after the end of the 'Right of Registration' period, anyone who registers a .UK domain will have the legal rights to it. Nominet have made it clear that registering a.UK domain, where the rights holder has not exercised their right, will not be deemed an abusive registration.

For those that really value their online identity and want to protect their brand exercising their right of registration is a must. As the massively popular UK namespace is already heavily used and almost no 6 letter domains remain for registration in the existing .co.uk, .me.uk or .org.uk names, .UK will be seen as a shorter, snappier and almost most certainly, more available domain name.

DS4A want to ensure YOU keep the .UK domain you are entitled to have. That's why we would encourage anyone who has a qualifying domain under Nominets 'Right of Registration' to exercise their right now.

Just simply register the .UK qualifying domain, using the details for your existing domain that enables you to qualify. If you need any guidance, advice or help, please feel free to contact us.
